To do so, they use tools such as Google Alerts, as shown in Figures 7-5 and 7-6. Other Internet mon- itoring tools work in a similar way, such as Mentionmapp, which monitors Twitter comments and trends; Social Mention, which monitors social networking sites; and Brand24, which is designed for businesses. If you work in sales, marketing, or customer service, you can set up keywords or topics you want Google Alerts to track, such as the name of your product or company. Google Alerts then monitors the entire Web and sends the results of what it finds to you by e-mail. The results are links to locations such as Web pages, blogs, online articles, videos, and reviews, that mention your company. If customers comment on your products, you can contact them to show appreciation or offer to solve their problem. This proactive approach is proving popular with consumers, who are often frustrated when trying to contact customer service representatives in large companies. 1. Visit the Google Alerts homepage Open your Web browser and go to www.google.com/alerts. Enter one or more keywords for the alert you want to set up. For example, to track Web content that mentions your company, enter your company's name. 2. Select the type of alert you want to receive You can choose one of six types of alerts: Everything, which tracks news arti- cles, Web sites, and blogs; News, which tracks the latest news articles; Blogs, which tracks the latest blog posts; Video, which monitors the latest online videos; Discussion, which tracks discussions in Google Groups; and Books, which tracks content in Google Books. 3. Select a frequency Choose how often you want to receive the alerts. You can receive them as soon as Google Alerts finds a match to your keyword, once a day, or once a week. 4. Provide an e-mail address Enter the e-mail address where you would like to receive the Google Alerts. 5. Finish creating the alert Click the Create Alert button, shown in Figure 7-5.
