CHAPTER 9: COMPUTERS AND TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTH CARE

CHAPTER 9 SUMMARY The use of computers and technology in health care has become a necessity. All health care pro- viders should have basic computer literacy. ■Computers are used to provide patient infor- mation, schedule personnel, manage financial records, and maintain records and inventory. ■Computers are used as diagnostic tools to per- form blood tests or view body parts. Technology, such as lasers, robotics, image-guided surgery, radiation therapy, ultrasound, hearing-assistive devices, and medication-dispensing systems, have provided efficient methods of treatment. •Patients can be monitored using computerized technology to check heart rate, pulse and many other body systems. • Computers and technology can be used as major educational tools. • Computers are critical components in health care research. Why are lasers, robotic surgery, and image-guided surgery more efficient than standard types of surgery? 2. How do health standards impact computer use? ACTIVITIES Using the following scenarios, create a flow chart illustrating how computer technolo- gies have improved communication and therefore improved patient care. a. Mona is expecting her first child and has developed high blood pressure. Her doctor has ordered complete bedrest and blood pressure medication, but Mona needs to be monitored for spikes in blood pressure, premature contractions, and personal stress levels. b. Younis is a 58-year-old man suffering from kidney failure. He is currently on dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant. He has developed type 2 diabetes mellitus and is having difficulty stabilizing his condition. 14/10/2022 10:15
