CHAPTER 3 SUMMARY More than 250 different careers in health care pro- vide individuals with opportunities to find occupa- tions they enjoy. • Professional health care careers have specific educational requirements. Most also require certification, registration with a professional body, and/or licensure. Therapeutic service careers include doctors, dentists, emergency medicine, mental health and social services, nursing, dietitians and veterinary specialists. Those following a diagnostic service career perform tests and evaluations that aid in diagnosis and treatment. ⚫ Health informatics involves the documentation of patient and medical information. Support services include all the administrative roles that enable the medical services to function, such as administration, equipment maintenance and housekeeping. ⚫ Biotechnology careers involve the use of living cells and their molecules to create useful products. CRITICAL THINKING 1. Prepare a paper for one (1) occupation in each of the health science careers. Use and document at least two (2) online resources. Each career paper must include: Job description with roles and responsibilities. . The knowledge and skills needed for the career. Track the pathway of education or study from high school through post- secondary; include employment opportunities. Traits required to excel in the career. • Licensure or credentialing requirements. ⚫ Non-educational requirements, i.e., age, physical fitness testing. • Include between one (1) to three (3) photographs to illustrate this career. 2. With a partner, conduct an interview with a health care provider in one (1) of the pathways to a health science career. Create a video.
