CHAPTER 7 SUMMARY ⚫Human growth and development is a process that begins at birth and continues throughout life. . • Each life stage has its own characteristics and specific developmental tasks that an individual must master. Each stage establishes the foundation for the next stage. Abraham Maslow, a noted psychologist, developed a hierarchy of needs used to classify and define the REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. Differentiate between growth and development. . needs experienced by human beings, classified into five levels: physiological, safety and security, love and affection, esteem, and self-actualization. • Needs are met or satisfied by direct and indirect methods. Direct methods meet and eliminate a need. Indirect methods, usually the use of defense mechanisms, reduce the need and help relieve the tension created by the unmet need. 2. He finds himself stressed out and unable to focus in his classes. Discuss with Hamad the methods of satisfying human needs and how learning them would help in coping to achieve satisfaction by meeting his need. 2. Reflect on how you obtain the things you need. What are two (2) methods you use to meet or satisfy your needs? 3. Using an unlined sheet of paper, create a symbolic representation for Maslow's Hierarchy, such as a building, pile of books, or anything else to make the analogy. Based upon your idea, label each level, and list a health care-based example of each level of needs. 14/10/2022 10:14

ACTIVITIES 1. The teacher will form seven groups. With your group, create a brochure for patient education for families in your clinic where you are a physician's assistant. Include your evaluation of the factors that impact growth and development in the physical, mental, emotional, and social areas for the stage of life your teacher assigns to your group. Add an illustration or summary paragraph analyzing how each factor contributes to the health and wellness of individuals in this stage of life. 2. Noor is a 16-year-old junior in high school that has severe asthma. She has been hospitalized an average of six times a year, for a week at a time, throughout her life. She is an average student, has low physical endurance, and is not part of any groups or organizations at school or in the community. She has three friends, who live on her street. Noor is meeting her counselor, complaining that she does not feel a part of her school or community and needs help to understand her options. In a small group, create a dialogue between Noor and the counselor that would illustrate her use of each defense mechanism: rationalization, projection, displacement, compensation, daydreaming, repression, suppression, regression, denial, and withdrawal as Noor reacts to the counselor's suggestions. 3. With a partner, create a flow chart explaining the causes and treatment for smok- ing. Include healthy choices instead of turning to harmful habits such as smoking. وزارة التعليم Mingo Eduction 2022-1444 GE44.PATHWAYS.G02 S2.HLTH.SB.indb 129 HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT 129 14/10/2022 10:14
