+ 12 Form, Meaning and Function Conditional Sentences: Imaginary Situations You can use conditional sentences to talk about imaginary or hypothetical situations in the present. Use the simple past in the if-clause and would in the main clause. If they built a new highway, the farmers would be affected. If I was/were rich, I wouldn't have to work. The contraction of would is 'd: I'd, you'd, he'd, she'd, we'd, they'd. They'd be happy if they had time to take a vacation.
