Life-Span Plan Project: Part 2

A Life-Span Plan . . . . . Think of your life span as a straight line that contains the important events of your life cycle, such as preparing for a career, raising a family, or enjoying retirement. When you are young, you will set long- term goals that you want to achieve over a period of years during your life span. As you get older, your priorities are likely to shift, and your goals and aspirations will evolve over time. Successful people create long-term plans for how they can achieve their life-span goals. These plans are called life-span plans. In Part One, we introduced a life- span timeline for Nura, illustrating the relationship between a life span and events in a person's life cycle. Everyone has a different life-span timeline, as each of our lives takes a different course of events. In Part Two, we will focus on creating plans that utilize Specific, Measurable Achievable, Relevant, and Time bound goals to provide direction and maintain focus. CHECKPOINT How do personal goals impact your career choice? FIGURE 1 SMART GOALS specific measurable attainable relevant CREATING SMART GOALS A SMART Life-Plan For Nura In Part One's Life-Span Plan Project, we learned how Nura envisages a career in the art world, perhaps working in a museum or gallery. She also considers herself an entrepreneur, and dreams of owning a gallery to showcase and sell the works of local artists. Since creating her life-span plan, Nura has gained more experience volunteering in a local art museum and networking with Saudi artists from the region. She is determined to set up her own art business and start putting her plans into action. However, she is increasingly interested in how she might utilize technology, such as social media tools, virtual reality exhibitions, and online payment options in her business. She is also passionate about making her business green and sustainable, with minimal impact on the environment. What's more, Nura wants to ensure that she will be able to successfully juggle running her business with raising a family. What Nura needs now is to create a set of clearly defined goals that will help focus her to achieve her long term aims. These plans must be SMART as illustrated in Figure 1. SMART goals are used to ensure valuable resources are not wasted. An example of how personal goals could be formed using the SMART principle is shown below: Specific The personal goal must have clear, qualitative outcomes and explain clearly what must be achieved. Specific goals must answer questions like: Exactly what needs to be accomplished What steps must be completed to achieve the final goal LI P178 | Life-Span Plan Project Ministry of Education 2024-1446 timely

A specific personal example could be: Specific To gain experience of using social media tools, virtual reality and online payment systems by volunteering and working in existing businesses. Measurable If the personal goal does not have any measure of how much experience or when the experience must be gained by, it is difficult to track your learning, or know whether you have learned enough. Nura knows she wants to gain experience of social media, virtual reality and online payment systems, but how much experience does she need? When will she have enough experience. To make this objective measurable, Nura must use some time- or number based benchmarks so she knows when the goal has been achieved. Measurable To gain experience of using social media tools, virtual reality and online payment systems by volunteering and working in existing businesses, creating and managing two social media, virtual reality-based campaigns on four social media platforms, setting up the payment system and tracking the financial outcomes from start to finish. Achievable When setting goals, it is often possible to set unrealistic and unachievable goals, such as having a 100% success rate, or making $1 million profit in the first year. It is important that the objective is something that actually can be achieved. When reviewing the goal, you may think that the goal is too optimistic and may not even be possible to complete. For example, the museum where Nura is volunteering only uses two social media platforms and online payment systems are processed centrally, وزارة التعليم Ministry of Education 2024-1446 • therefore it may not be possible to achieve the goal. The goal must therefore be reviewed and amended. Achievable To gain experience of using social media tools, virtual reality and online payment systems by volunteering and working in existing businesses, creating and managing two social media, virtual reality-based campaigns on two social media platforms, checking the online payment system reports weekly. If it is not possible to amend your goals, it is important that you highlight and communicate any potential issues or stumbling blocks that may stop you from achieving the goal as soon as possible. Relevant It is also important to understand and explain clearly why the goal is being set. This helps to focus the goal and make sure the goal helps to achieve a bigger objective. Nura knows that social media campaigns are very important in modern day sales channels and as a small business, she would be unable to pay someone else to create these campaigns for her. Relevant To gain experience of using social media tools, virtual reality and online payment systems by volunteering and working in existing businesses, creating and managing two social media, virtual reality-based campaigns on two social media platforms, checking the online payment system reports weekly. This knowledge will help to attract target customers in a cost effective manner and avoid negative cashflow. Life-Span Plan Project | 179

Timely When goals are set, there must be an end date or a specific time period. If there is no time period then most goals could eventually be achieved, but it might be too late. What is the time period allowed for the project? When must the project be completed by? Time-based To gain two years' experience of using social media tools, virtual reality and online payment systems by volunteering and working in existing businesses, creating and managing two social media, virtual reality-based campaigns on two social media platforms by July 2025, checking the online payment system reports weekly and being able to complete sales reports by April 2025. This knowledge will help to attract target customers in a cost-effective manner and avoid negative cashflow. Once all of these dates have been added, the SMART goal is complete. A well written life-span plan, with clear and SMART goals will help Nura to establish her business and launch her career. SMART goals are used to help guide the goal setting process. This gives a sense of direction and allows resources to be planned and allocated to the project which will help reach the final goal. However, a poorly written plan with vague or poorly thought out goals may cause her to have ineffective decision-making processes which means she may not achieve her overall ambitions. If Nura does not follow the SMART process, she may not get the relevant depth of knowledge of social media campaign planning, or she may still be learning about social media in ten years time. By setting a goal which is not SMART, Nura, may focus on incorrect priorities or may find out that she does not have the necessary experience to start her own business. Nura realizes that writing her life-span plan will involve careful planning and may have some trade-offs. By continuing to volunteer at the museum instead of starting her own business, Nura may not begin earning an income for two years, which could impact on her quality of life. All decisions have consequences and Nura may well have to choose between two positive options or even choose the least worst option. P180 Life-Span Plan Project Ministry of Education 2024-1446
